Just a few facts...
As of end of Q1 2009 Canlan has since 2007 reduced its carbon emissions by 4% using the same store basis
· In areas where electricity is priced high usually means that the production of that electricity is not as environmentally friendly as areas where rates are lower. Example: it cost more the generate a unit of energy using fossil fuel than a hydro dam. As a result it makes both environmental & business sense to target the areas that have the largest carbon impact first. This will be Canlan’s objective over the next few years.
· Changing Use Practices:
Reducing energy is not just about buying more energy efficient stuff. It’s also about asking ourselves what do we really need when it comes to energy use.
o Examples:
§ Do I really need to have 36 office lights on when working at my desk, or perhaps just a desk lamp and a couple corridor lamps?
§ When doing maintenance on the ice: Does that task require all the area lights to be on using 28,400 Watts or would 1,200 Watts provide sufficient lighting?
· Ice production & Arena Lighting are our two largest users of electricity. Space heating and hot water are the two big users of Natural Gas. It is in these areas that energy reducing initiatives will be focused within our facilities over the short term.
